Teeth Cleaning and Gum Care

Family Dental Services - Louisville, KYDoctors Blincoe and Shutt urge all of their patients to recognize the important role proper dental care plays in their overall health and appearance. Studies have shown there is a correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease, diabetes, and pancreatic cancer. Bleeding or tender gums can allow bacteria to flow into your system, leading to potentially serious problems.

So when you make regular appointments to have your teeth cleaned and examined, you’re not only caring for your oral health, but your overall health as well!

Dental Crowns, Bridges &

If you’re missing teeth, crown and bridgework or dental implants may be ‘just what the doctor ordered!’ Crowns are essentially caps placed over existing teeth, and are an excellent treatment option when loss of tooth structure has made placement of fillings difficult.

Permanent bridges utilize crowns to anchor to your natural teeth, literally ‘bridging the gap’ left by a missing tooth or teeth. Permanent bridges look and function much like natural teeth, and remain in your mouth at all times-no need to remove them when you eat or sleep! But crowns and bridges don’t just offer cosmetic benefits, they also add valuable support to your remaining natural teeth, helping to maintain your natural bite, improve your speech, smile and chewing abilities, and prevent further decay and gum disease.

Dental implants can also be utilized predictably to replace missing teeth.  A single dental implant can replace a single tooth without involving adjacent teeth. The end result is a comfortable, natural smile that’s permanent-no need for gooey adhesives! If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions can be needed for various reasons. Sometimes the tooth is unhealthy due to decay, trauma to the tooth, gum disease or being impacted.  Other times a tooth extraction can be called for when it crowds other teeth or is part of preparation for braces or other orthodontic treatment.  No matter what the reason, we can work with you to solve the problem.

Dr. Shutt will work with you to make the procedure as painless and safe as possible.  We will review all alternatives so you know what is in front of you.  Many times additional procedures are necessary to replace the removed tooth or teeth.  We will work to be sure you have a plan in place from start to finish for your extracted tooth.  Our goal as always is to leave you with a beautiful smile after all the work is completed!

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligners are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you simply wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You simply pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete and you achieve the confident smile that you’ve always wanted. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.

Dr. Shutt can put together a plan for you to take advantage of this modern approach to straightening  your teeth.  To get started on your plan, give us a call at (502) 895-2210 or e-mail us at

Do You Clench or Grind Your Teeth?

Did you know that about thirty to forty percent of people are in the habit of grinding their teeth or clenching their jaws? This condition is called ‘bruxism,’ and if severe, it can lead to a number of medical, dental, and cosmetic issues. In some cases, grinding occurs because the top and bottom teeth are misaligned; in other cases, it’s the result of a sleep disorder or can even be stress-induced. In any case, there are a wide variety of treatment options available, including custom-fitted bite guards worn at night to prevent grinding during sleep.

If bruxism is a problem for you or for a member of your family, Doctors Blincoe and Shutt may be able to help. Schedule your appointment for a consultation as soon as possible. We can’t wait to see you!  Give us a call at (502) 895-2210. or e-mail us at
